Referring to your Despatch No. 339 of the 8th.

November, I have the honour to inform you that, when the late Mr.

J. Ross first became a subscriber to the Widows and Orphans

Pensions Fund, in the year 1896, he signed the usual form of

particulars and made no reference to a wife or children; and he

did not, subsequently to that date, notify the Directors of the

Fund of his marriage.

It appears from a letter addressed by Messrs.

Morris and Macdonald to the Director of Public Works that a Mrs.

Christina Matheson or Ross, lately residing in Inverness, and a

Mrs. Jane Ross of Auckland, New Zealand, both claim to have been

legally married to the deceased. It will of course be necessary, before any pension becomes payable, for the Directors of the Fund to satisfy themselves regarding the proofs of Mr. Ross's marriage, and the lawful widow will further be required to furnish evidence as to the date of birth of herself and of any children born in wed-

-lock.
